Making Digital Look Physical

For this project I was tasked with creating a PSA for Mass Audubon revolving around rodenticides and the harm they cause raptors. I wanted to experiment with making handmade looking graphics using primarily digital tools, so I ended up making a pencil and paper style that used both real images and digital graphics.

Mass Audubon is an organization focused on conserving the environment with a focus on birds. I had the experience of getting to work with them on a psa focused on rodenticides (rat poison) during my time in one of my motion design courses.

I made the characters using vector graphics before editing them to look like they were drawn on paper with a pencil. I wanted the style to be more lighthearted to contrast against the somewhat morbid subject matter of the PSA.

I then used Adobe After Effects to give them more of a stop motion styled look. Since I was doing more of a mixed media style with real photos, I thought having real paper incorporated would blend the two aspects of the animation more smoothly.
